Portrait of Napoleon, French School after David
Portrait de Napoléon, l'école française après David
Napoleon in the uniform of an officer in the National Guard
First quarter 19th century
After David - French School,
Oil on canvas
60 x 50cm
This portrait is taken from David’s full length portrait of Napoleon which shows him standing in his study in the Tulieries palace. He is wearing the uniform of an officer in the National Guard, rather than his more commonly worn uniform of a colonel in the Imperial Guard. On his left breast he wears the Star of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour with miniature medals of the Legion of Honour and the Italian Order of the Iron Crown.
