Grassy is shown wearing the uniform of a member of the Corp Legislatif.  Their uniform consisted of a blue coat, embroidered with gold, blue silk cape with lining and cuffs of white silk embroidered with gold, blue breeches and white waistcoat embroidered with gold, white belt, trimmed with gold spirals; black felt hat with white feathers and a lace cravat.

Grassy was the representative for the Basse-Alps region from the year AN XI (1802) until his death in Paris in 1813. In 1804 he attended Napoleon's coronation and this painting may have been done soon after that event.
