Granting of a Coat of Arms to the French town of Agen - 1812
A vellum document granting Arms to Agen, a small town located in south western France, signed by both Napoleon and Jean Jacques Régis de Cambaceres, Arch-chancellor of the Empire.
The coat of arms, with a red background, features a black roaster with a scroll in it’s claws, a golden tower and in the top left hand corner a capital N and star within a blue square.
Agen today is a sleepy little town, nestled between hills and a river in the far East of Aquitaine. It's difficult to imagine that it used to be a bustling Roman trading centre, or at the heart of the 100 year war with England in the 14th centruy.
